My Grandma Just wanted to let you all know that my Grandma, Nellie Herman, passed away on Wednesday. She lived a very full life, and will be greatly missed. The holiday will not be the same without her or Grandpa who passed away only 2 weeks ago. Since I actually will not be able to make it to the funeral, I decided to write something to share with you. I guess it's my own memorial, to help deal with her passing. I also attached her obituary. Thanks for taking the time to open and read. Thanks for being friends, and I hope the holiday season gives time for some reflection and some time spent with loved ones. Love, Jason Below is something I wrote this morning: Recipe for Grandma If Sugar and Spice, and Everything Nice is what a girl is made of, then what can be said of a Grandma and what she is made of. A Grandma is much more complex than just sugar and spice. First off, a large part of Grandma was made up of years, 96 to be exact. Years that were tough, and trying. Years that included living through the Depression, and then seeing the world change around her. Years spent riding, not driving. Years spent caring for and raising. Years spent tending and baking and sewing. She was made up of chuckles and laughs and smiles and hugs. She was made up of a warm heart, and a knack for making everyone smile. She was made up of talent in sewing and needlework, and of the best luck in cards and board games. She had a head full of recipes that were lost in translation when written down, because anything we’ve tried to make of hers is never as good as when she made it. She was made of traditions at holidays, giving the best presents--whether a handmade item, or a homecooked goodie. She knew how to eat lefse the right way, buttered, without sugar. She practiced green living and recycling long before the rest of the world realized it was a good idea. (I still remember one blouse she wore regularly that can be seen in pictures from when I was born, and when I graduated high school, and now can be seen on display in many of the quilts that she made.) She was a wife, a grandmother and a great-grandmother. She was a homemaker, a hotelkeeper, a cook, and a postmaster. She was a square dancer, a quilter, a gardener, and a chef of the best pancakes ever. A seamstress, a card shark, and the best listener, even when she wasn’t hearing you that well. She was understated and quiet, but full of life, and brought joy to me and so many others. Most of all, she was made up of lots of love…… from and for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, all relatives, and friends. Of Sugar and Spice, and everything nice... Grandma was sweet, there’s no doubt about that. Spice, though? Maybe Cinnamon or Nutmeg, after all, she was Norwegian. All that, and much more, that’s what Grandma was made of. -J http://www.fergusfallsjournal.com/obits/2008/dec/19/nellie-herman-96/ | | Sunday, July 20th, 2008 | | 11:59 pm |
disconnected This week feels like a total role reversal for me in some ways. I feel that I'm reconnecting with family, but somewhat at the expense of friendships. I feel like I haven't been around for any weekend activities here for a month, and I think that may be close to it. The last wknd I went out was pride. This coming wknd is MNBearBall, which should be fun if luke has anything to say about it and any access to buying shots. If so, I'm sure the will be Couture Dancing (TM). My mom said she loves me and patted me on the head when I left today. Odd. Welcomed, and totally heartfelt, but still odd. Saw multitudes of aunts and uncles. Spoke with a cousin I haven't been on good terms with for 3 years nearly. But now my 2 best college friends seem to feel slighted because I haven't been around. It's all part of the ebb and flow of relationships. Don't even get me going on work relationships....last week i had a meeting, and there are more to come. ugh. | | Wednesday, June 4th, 2008 | | 12:30 am |
Last year i had a tree/shrub stolen from my yard. I told a neighbor about it then and she didn't know who would do anything like that. Lastweek I mentioned it to her again, and this week a new one appeared on my doorstep, ready for planting... I think my neighbor is somehow involved with a plant fairy. | | Monday, May 19th, 2008 | | 9:52 pm |
Tulips from my yard Even though I'm no good at gardening and lawn/yard maintenance, I love reaping the benefits of having a previous owner who actually cared about her flower beds... | | Sunday, May 18th, 2008 | | 6:27 pm |
post lj Luke and I spent Sunday evening making sushi. Fuji-Ya can suck it! Now we have to go get "real food" for Luke. | | Sunday, May 11th, 2008 | | 12:27 am |
so i got a subway sandwich tonight and asked for mustard on it, it was far too strong for my weak palate, on top of the jalepenos and the banana peppers, so i didn't eat the remaining 6 in. I left and was walking on the sidewalk, and this woman walking toward me said "hey mister!" Then she said "happy friday." (I wanted to tell her it's saturday) then she asked me "you want to help the homeless?" I handed her my sandwich asking her if she wanted it she asked if I had money for the bus, and I said no, but warned her of the mustard, she smiled hope she likes peppers | | Saturday, May 10th, 2008 | | 9:51 pm |
dusting off
So I dusted off some old icons (it actually happened automatically when I deleted some other ones). This one made me laugh, cause I look crazy young and with hair, and skinny-ish in the bear sense. Maybe I'll make it my goal...minus the hair. I ain't doing no hair club fo men, er nuthin. So i've been really working on being better with food this week. I have worked out so far 4 x this week too. Not crazy workouts though, I don't want to burn out. I just am making sure I go to the gym, and then do something cardio at least. Weights are a bonus if I feel like them. I also have been entering my food journal into fitday.com. It's good and a little disheartening. When you think you're doing well, and then you find out that olive oil (although better for you than veggie oil) still has an ungodly amount of fat grams in it....it makes you wonder just what can you put on leafy greens to choke them down? lol my face and scalp are done peeling from the sunburn, although my right forearm has just started. Although it's annoying and a little gross, it totally reminds me of SD and certain people and events and playing vb in the park, and then I smile... San Diego is totally missed by me right now. I'm working all wknd, and working out. Tuesday (my day off) will surely be consumed with house chores like mowing if it's nice enough, and possibly some upstairs cleaning...yuck Current Music: angst ridden lesbian bitches | | Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 | | 12:12 am |

Mile high city, huh?
So I'm off to Denver today. I'm not nearly as excited as I would like to be. I haven't done an ounce of research on the city, bars, or bears there. I don't know much about it other than it's in the mountains and I'm nervous for playing vb at such a high altitude. I suck wind down here, how will I compete up there? lol The team I am going with is basically the same team from St Louis tourney in Feb, but we have not prepared together nearly as much this time around. I think that might be a problem, but hopefully we'll gel on the court. My hand-me-down ipod (that S&L gave me when mine was stolen) finally crapped out today as I was trying to charge it for the trip. So I broke out my even older orriginal style shuffle. How good will I look on that plane surrounded by iphones, ipod touches, and colorful new nano's? One word: Fierce. | | Tuesday, April 8th, 2008 | | 9:28 pm |
So I have been on a schedule at work for over a year, working 4-9 hour days per week Tuesday through Friday. It's really been a perfect schedule for me. It allows me to travel without taking days off work, and I feel rested every Tuesday when I get back to the job. It has allowed me to save up a ton of vacation time too, which has been wonderful. There is another person at work who has been on a similar schedule, except has Tuesdays off. She works Mon, and Wed-Fri. She complained in her last review that she would like 3 day wknds too, and so our schedules have been switched. I started my new "Tuesday Off" schedule this week. It is officially the SUCK. I really hate it. I have seniority over the other worker, and I feel I should be able to keep my schedule. On the other side, I know i'm not staying at this job forever. Actually this may be a blessing in disguise because I feel like it's going to get me off my butt and maybe up and moving and going with life...Complacency is the real SUCK. | | Sunday, April 6th, 2008 | | 8:12 pm |
My Weekend in Review
So I left work a little early on Friday. I drove to my mom's house, which generally takes about 2:45, however because of rush hour traffic and a stop for gas and at taco johns, it took by 4 hours to get home. I watched Hillary give a very long speech at the North Dakota Democratic Convention, which was on TV. My mom had watched the whole beginning where Barack spoke. I watched the highlights of his speech also. Although she went on forever, she was really amazing to listen to. She has plans, and ideas, and specifics...all of which impress me. I do like Barack too, don't get me wrong. He is the kind of guy who could definitely inspire a country, and I think that is awesome too. Honestly whoever gets the nomination, I won't have a problem voting for. I woke up and my mom and I went to eat, then to visit my grandparents in the nursing home. I always enjoy visiting them, but I always leave feeling as though it could be the last time I see them. They get more and more frail each time, although, my grandpa did look better this time around. Not unheard of in western MN in April, we were under a storm watch. Rain was to turn to snow, and on top of icy roads they were likely to get 5-10 inches...yuck. I drove back to mpls and stopped at Kohls to grab a shirt to wear to Bear Prom. I actually didn't find anything that i liked that really fit me, so I went in my Fierce t-shirt. The prom was awesome, and I wish more people would have come. The balloon arch was perfect, and the ice sculpture of the bear that they were pouring vodka down at the martini bar was an amazing touch....just like my high school prom! lol. ok maybe not. Music was better than the usual. What can I tell you, I wish I would have had a date to do the whole eat out at a nice restaurant before, but taco johns rocked my world. lol. I got real drunk. like REAL drunk. As in when I walked up the steps getting dropped off, while I was trying to fumble with keys to get in and holding onto my burger sack and soda.....I felt like my pants were going to slip right down. Then they did slip down. So pants around ankles, me trying to key into my house, holding burgers and soda nice picture, huh? P.S. : Today I saw "Leatherheads" I actually really liked it. | | Monday, March 31st, 2008 | | 6:05 pm |
Seriously? WTF! I'm so sick of winter right now. I just shoveled the sidewalk for the umpteenth time this year, then because my neighbor is a super cool lesbian and she hurt her back, I shoveled hers too. I'm beat, and so sick of the white crap. Just yesterday I could see my whole brown lawn....grrrr Current Mood: annoyed | | Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 | | 7:45 pm |
Sickly
I hate not feeling well. I have a throat thing mixed with this sinus thing, compounded by an ear thing and a headache. Boooo. Truth be told, I felt a lot worse this morning and all day at work, could it be possible I'm allergic to work? That's how I feel. Honestly! I haven't been at work for 2 weeks other than 1 day 2 weeks ago, and 2 days last week, and it has been WONDERFUL. I am getting to the point break in regards to my job. Everything that I am annoyed with seems to just fester too. Does being sick give one the right to call off a diet? What about if i'm only one day into the diet? lol Damn that taco johns. TBRU rocked Hey guys--just back from TBRU, and I had a great time. Glad to meet new people, and hang with some of the old (not in age) ones too. This is what I ended up wearing at the LJ meet and greet, thanks to some friends. If you want to see more highlights of my trip, click here. More to come. | | Saturday, October 6th, 2007 | | 8:25 am |
random updates
work is hectic- i have a student which i really enjoy, but it makes the rest of my job, and my temp duties as lead, very difficult. I feel like I want her experience to be the best it can be, and not like she's getting dumped off on other people every time I have a meeting or the like. I have too many duties there right now with not enough pay. I am debating career change (not new information there) gopher volleyball is tenuous- we are good, but not amazing. Last night vs OSU we won in 5, but it was too close for comfort. Then again i guess that's what makes it exciting and ultimately why people watch. The freshmen are coming along, which is awesome, but tonight i anticipate our big 10 winning streak will come to an end home is messy- I need to do some cleaning today/this wknd. I wish I had the mondy to have someone make the yard a concrete jungle that i never had to mow. Maybe i should set up a paypal account podcasting is fun- i really enjoy it still. I think we have a niche appeal. I'm glad some people enjoy listening every week dating is precarious- There is a fine line between so many things. like/love, handsome/hot, cuddle/sex friendship is invaluable- an old co-worker and I got together 2x this week. She now lives in Indianapolis and misses mn so much. She spent all day thur taking pics of her favorite restaurants and lamenting why Indy has a significant lack of good food (her words, people, not mine). I am so saddened by another friend getting ready to move. I'm sure life will go on, but it's tough to imagine how it will affect life and friendships here | | Sunday, September 9th, 2007 | | 9:32 pm |
crazy busy
I have had such a busy weekend! I have loved every minute of it so far. On Thursday I took a friend to bar 19 and thanh do, which was awesome. Friday I went to happy hour and then to bulldog NE for dinner, then to S&L for drinks. Sat I L and I finished the bottle of pear vodka at the pool party, and then kept the spree going for a total of like 11 hours today I went to the Vikes game with J and sat in a suite! then headed to C in STP for vegitarian chili, then swung by beer bust which was lame-ish, now i'm at home. Wheeeeeee. | | Monday, September 3rd, 2007 | | 9:34 pm |
The end of days...of summer at least
So it's been crazy good weather the past 5 days or so here. What a perfect end to summer. It feels like it's not going to stop, that it will just stay sun-shiny hot forever. My mom visited this weekend, and we hung out, watched volleyball, and visited with quite a few of my friends. It is always fun to have her along, because I think she is not a typical mom. My friend G especially loves her as he does not have a close relationship with his mom. He makes a point every time he sees her to tell me how lucky I am, and that I need to appreciate her more (which I am, and I need to do more). I hope that the good weather holds out til next wknd (bear pool party-woot woot). | | Thursday, August 30th, 2007 | | 10:55 pm |
